Secret Black Woman: American Virtues is the latest short graphic memoir in the award-winning Secret Black Woman comic series by Ingrid Pierre that traces the fractures of an Haitian-American family across several decades. Ranging from Guantanamo Bay in the 1990s to ICE raids in 2026, each chapter peels back a layer of the narrator's relationship with her Haitian father, a retired federal immigration officer, and with the grandmother whose warmth bridged a generational divide. Moving between Miami, Cambridge and Washington D.C., this indie comic covers topics of immigration, identity, and policy with sincerity and sentiment.
This is a story about what happens when the ones you look toward for refuge and guidance are searching for those things themselves.
